Swim Pathways

Teen Beginner Swim Lessons 

Students develop comfort with underwater exploration.  This stage also focuses on body position, directional change and forward movement.  Students practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.

Parent Child Lessons
30 Minute Class
Ages: 6 months – 3 years
Develops water enrichment and aquatic readiness in children.

Stage A: Water Discovery Parents accompany children in this stage, which introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water.  If not yet potty-trained, children need to wear swim-type diapers.

Stage B: Water Exploration – In this stage parent’s work with their children to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skill.

Preschool (3 – 5 yrs), Youth (6 – 12 yrs)
30 min class
Develops personal water safety and basic swimming skills in students of all ages.

Stage 1: Water Acclimation – This stage lays the foundation that allows for student’s future progress in swimming. Students in this stage focus on exploring the aquatic environment and personal skills with instructor help, Develop basic skills to propel and glide through the water, learn basic aquatic safety.

Stage 2: Water Movement – Students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.

Stage 3: Water Stamina – Students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.

Preschool (3 – 5 yrs), Youth (6 – 12 yrs)
30 min class 
Introduces and refines stroke technique in older students.

Stage 4: Stroke Introduction – Students in this stage develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick.  Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary back stroke.  This class will be taught in the deep end.  Parents are not allowed in the water during lessons regardless of their child’s age.

Stage 5: Stroke Development – Students in this stage work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke.

Stage 6: Stroke Mechanics – In this stage, students refine stroke technique on all major competitive strokes, learn about competitive swimming, and discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle.

Swim Pathways

PREPARE FOR YOUR CLASS

  • Upon being allowed to enter the pool area, please follow all lifeguard prompts as well as instructions from the swim lesson teachers.
  • Locker rooms are available for use both before and after classes.
  • After your lesson, locker room access will be available directly off of the pool deck.
  • On deck bathroom facility is available for use during your lesson time.

CLASS MODIFICATIONS

  • Instructors will teach in the water with participants. 
  • Parent/guardian will no longer need to be in the pool with their child, except for parent/child level.
  • Parents/guardians will be allowed to sit on the pool deck in designated areas to watch swim lessons.
  • Pools will be closed to all other uses during scheduled lesson times. (reservations will not be available for lap swimming – our staff will let you know if the time you request to reserve is not available due to programming)
  • All Stage 4, 5, & 6 classes will be taught in the deep end of the pools. Class participants will be in the pool on their own.
  • All Stage 4, 5, & 6 class participants will be evaluated on first day of lessons to assure their ability to safely perform skills in the deep end of the pools. No one will be allowed to continue the classes if they are unable to safely swim in the deep end.
  • Locker Rooms and showers are available for use before and after lessons – details for use are covered in the “Preparing for Your Class” tab.
  • Bathroom facilities for use during your lesson time will be available.
 

PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS

Details:
  • Schedules set up directly between client and instructor
  • Lessons are available for 30 minute, 45 minute, or 60 minute sessions
  • Lessons can be split between up to 3 clients
  • Each lesson is paid for before that specific lesson is taken
  • Instructor will let each client into the pool area through one specific entry point
  • Lesson participants can exit the pool area into their appropriate locker room to shower and/or dry off and change

Private swim lessons are open to YMCA members and nonmembers. Please note: lessons are not guaranteed as they are based on instructor availability at each location.
