Job Title: Counselor In Training (CIT) Director
FLSA Status: Non Exempt-Seasonal 
Reports to: Summer Camp & Retreats Director

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the full time directors, responsibilities include the scheduling and programming of the overall Counselor-In-Training (CIT) program, and the day-to-day supervision of CITs including their training during instructional time periods, work sessions, and recreational periods.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Design a four-week program for the CITs. It must meet the camp philosophies, aims, and objectives and also meet the guidelines that are set for the program.
2. Directs the daily instructional sessions, including planning, set up, administration, supervision, and evaluation of the CIT session.
3. Supervises the CIT campers and assures that they are always following camp rules.
4. Provides program for the CITs to participate in the Counselor’s responsibilities under their supervision and with an evaluation from that supervising counselor.
5. Be in attendance at the weekly 1:00 PM Sunday staff meeting and all other program team meetings.
6. Integrates recreational activities with those of the entire camp and plan special recreational activities for the CIT campers.
7. Develops, secures materials, and carries out work projects that will benefit the entire camp and provide meaningful experiences for the CIT campers.
8. Does a final written and at least half-hour oral evaluations of the CITs performance during the whole program.
9. Completes a final program report on the effectiveness of curriculum, teaching methods, resources, staff efficiency, equipment and facilities, organization time allotments, suggestions, and problems.
10. Completes a year-end assessment and evaluation of each CIT for possible camp employment.
11. Participates in all of the courses, activities, classes, training, and planning sessions during the weeks of program pre-camp and pre-camp.
12. Actively participates on a planning committee for one Special Day per summer and is required to help with other all camp activities as needed.
13. Creates and maintains a harmonious, positive working relationship with fellow staff, YMCA Camp Wapsie campers and participants.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must possess strong communication skills both with a small group and on an individual basis.
  • Must possess the ability to provide leadership, instruction, a growth experience and a healthy, safe camping environment.
  • Must be able to design a four-week Counselor in Training program that follows the guidelines provided.
  • Must have current First Aid and CPR certifications. Lifeguard certification and tower training encouraged.
  •  Enjoys working and interacting with people of all types and ages, with a special emphasis on children, modeling and utilizing the important core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

The employee must meet physical demands of this position, which include mobility to travel to offsite locations, touring facilities and properties, and participating in special events sponsored by the Association.
