At the Y, a supportive community is a big part of wellness. At every age and every level of activity, you’ll find people just like you looking to live a little bit healthier. Members and program participants often cite the support and enthusiasm of fellow participants and staff as some of the key factors in their achievement of greater well-being. One member sums up her favorite class this way:

Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art most often practiced as a gentle form of exercise and mindful meditation.
Qi (pronounced chee) Gong consists of a variety of Chinese therapeutic exercises that have been around for more than 2,000 years. Qi Gong looks like Tai Chi but is generally easier to do.
Tai Chi and Qi Gong help improve balance, increase flexibility and control stress. Recent studies indicate they can strengthen the immune system, improve cardiovascular health and increase strength and mobility. They can be done by any one, anywhere. No special equipment is needed, and they can be done standing or seated.
Both Tai Chi and Qi Gong are informed by Traditional Chinese Medicine, which in turn was developed by individuals following Daoism. This philosophy emphasizes living in balance, or homeostasis.
