Human Resources Generalist

The YMCA of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Area is seeking a Human Resources Generalist to handle and administer human resources, benefit programs, support recruitment, and assist in payroll administration.

  • Advises managers/supervisors of YMCA employment and employee relations policies; meets with supervisors and employees in order to resolve employee relations issues; researches and resolves problems that arise pertaining to employment status.
  • Coordinates human resources programs, including Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) requests, compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, unemployment compensation management, and other special projects. Serves as the COBRA Administrator for the YMCA.
  • Administers various human resources plans and procedures for all YMCA personnel; develops and implements personnel policies and procedures; prepares and maintains employee handbook and policies and procedures manual.
  • Performs benefits administration to include claims resolution, change reporting, preparing invoices for payment, and communicating benefit information to employees.
  • Conducts annual benefits open enrollment each year. Arranges for distribution of materials from carriers, communicates changes to employees, conducts employee presentations, and processes changes within deadlines.
  • Maintains Human Resource Information System records and compiles reports from database.
  • Coordinates hiring process; schedules new employee orientation program and benefits orientation program for new hires; issues job confirmation letters; creates and maintains electronic/digital employee personnel files.
  • Maintains compliance with federal and state regulations regarding employment.
  • Assists in recruitment process through the design and placement of position announcements, advertising, participation in job fairs, and community outreach programs.
  • Develops and presents training programs; performs administrative duties that support the employment and employee relations functions; completes special projects; performs other duties as assigned.


  • Knowledge of human resources procedures, understanding of insurance regulations, and applicable employment policies and laws.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with superiors, colleagues, and individuals inside and outside of the YMCA.
  • Strong interpersonal/human relations skills.
  • Ability to manage various software applications proficiently.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in human resources is required.


This is a full time, exempt position with Mon-Fri business hours.  We offer a comprehensive benefit plan, PTO, and retirement contributions upon eligibility being met.
