This year, graduation looks different for our seniors. So we'd like to recognize some of our staff members from various YMCA locations and we hope you will join us in congratulating them! Thank you to these awesome seniors and all the work they have done for the Y, we know you will do great things!

Child Care Counselor

“I am a senior in high school at Jefferson high school and a counselor at the YMCA (Truman elementary).  I have been working at the YMCA for a year now. And my favorite part is no matter how bad of a day I’m having I can always count on the kiddos to make me laugh and smile!  Following high school I plan to attend Mount Mercy University where I will play softball and study business!”

Child Care Counselor

“I have been with the Y for about two months and I love being able to interact with the kids, and help them for their future ahead.  I will be attending either Arkansas State University Mountain Home or Kirkwood to study Criminal Justice.”

Child Care Counselor

“I am a Childcare Counselor at Van Buren Elementary and have been with the YMCA for a little over a year.  I started in February of 2019.  I enjoyed seeing the little kids faces every day and hearing about their days. I also miss the pictures and gifts they’d make me.  If colleges are back in session, then I will be a College Possible Success Coach at Coe College. I accepted the position in March before everything with Covid-19 started, so details are still in progress. Essentially I would be somewhat of a guide for students transitioning between high school and their freshman year of college.”

Child Watch

“I have been a child watch worker at the Stoney Point YMCA since September of 2018!  My favorite part about my job is when kids who are super shy and quiet, and eventually open up to me and my coworkers. I am headed to Iowa State next year to major in Biology as potentially pre-med with a minor in music.”

Building Supervisor

“I have worked at the Stoney Point Y for about five months.  What I love about the Y is that it is like a second family to me, everyone is treated as equals and everyone plays their role to the best of their ability!  My future plans are to attend Kirkwood Community College for Business Management and then further continue my academics at UNI.”

Building Supervisor

“I have worked at the Stoney Point YMCA for a little over a year.  I enjoy working for the Y because I like fitness, working with kids, and it is a laid back and friendly environment for everyone.  My future plans are to attend Kirkwood Community College for my general education courses and then transfer to either UNI or Iowa to get my degree.”

“This summer I will be a Junior Counselor at YMCA Camp Wapsie which will be my second summer on staff and my eighth summer at Wapsie.  What I enjoy most about working at Wapsie is helping my campers step outside of their comfort zones and enjoy their week!  Next year I will attend the University of Iowa studying Elementary Special Education.”

“In the summer I will be a Junior Counselor at Camp Wapsie and this will be my second summer working as a camp counselor.  I love the environment that I am able to work in and the joy of working with kids.  In the fall I will be attending the University of Iowa (Go Hawks!) and will be majoring in Biology.”

“I have been working for the YMCA going on one year now.  I enjoy being a part of new experiences for kids!  My future plans include majoring in Social Work and cheerleading at UNI!”

“This summer I will be a junior counselor at YMCA Camp Wapsie!  This will be my second year on staff as a counselor with Wapsie.  My favorite part about working for YMCA is the people. Not only are Wapsie staff amazing, but everyone at the Y is so helpful and it really is a big family. I have never seen an environment so welcoming for staff and campers alike.  I will be attending the University of Iowa majoring in psychology while on the pre-child life track. The end goal is to become a certified Child Life Specialist and work at children’s hospitals.”

“This will be my second year employed with the Y, I really enjoy working with the kids at camp because it is something I could see myself doing as a career.  I plan on attending UNI next fall on an undecided major at this time.”

“This is my second year of working at camp.  I love working for Camp Wapsie at the Y because it provides a safe and fun environment for child across the state. I love spreading Wapsie Magic and making the campers smile!  In the fall I’ll be a freshman at Barnard College of Columbia University studying human rights.”
